Evidence methodology

Context before conclusions

We summarize what a source evaluated, who was studied, the form and amount used, duration, outcome and limitations.

Source hierarchy

  1. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
  2. Randomized or controlled human studies.
  3. Observational human evidence.
  4. Mechanistic, animal or in-vitro evidence—clearly labeled.
  5. Absence of meaningful evidence.

Product evidence is separate

An ingredient study does not prove that a finished commercial product works. Exact-product trials, when verified, are recorded separately.

Freshness and limitations

Evidence summaries include a review date, confidence and limitations. A stale or incomplete source state remains visible.
